When I was a young gamer, around the age of 8, my father purchased a copy of Duke Nukem 3D for me. I was very fond of this game since at the ripe age of eight I was able to express a healthy sexual curiosity by throwing wads of cash at pixelated strippers to see virtual bewwbs. Not to mention I got to kill a bunch of crazy monsters with things like shrink rays and freeze guns etc.

Shortly after the original DN3D franchise and around the time Unreal first hit the shelves they announced they would be making a new game "Duke Nukem Forever" based on a new 3D engine the virtual strippers would satisfy my hormone riddled body to be sure.

But alas, it was not to be. Like wondering who is on the other side of a glory hole, i could hear mumbles and grumbles from the studio frequently but never the full frontal nudity that I sought.

Years went by and they taunted me relentlessly. A trailer here, a fake demo there; until finally my agony was over. 3D realms announced that they were closing their doors because they hadnt put out a game in over ten years.

Then, today, without warning, they announced this horrible bit of news:
"3D Realms asserts that "Despite rumors and statements to the contrary," (such as the Goodbye on their own website), the company "has not closed and is not closing," according to a press release issued to Shacknews."

Why do they delight in haunting me?!?!

Thoughts on this? Anyone else feel the same way?

Well, 3D Realms may still exist as a legal entity, but considering they had to fire basically the entire staff, I'd say it's pretty much a moot point.

Looks like they were able to negotiate to retain rights to their DN IP while getting investors interested in co-party creations along the lines of Max Payne and Prey.

I expect future announcements of a co-joined development of the real sequel to Duke Nukem.

From what I understand them not closing the studio is an attempt to try and dodge the Take Two lawsuit. Most of the employees have been laid off, however, which means this particular build of the game will probably be mostly scrapped, whenever a new publisher picks up the franchise.

Here's an excerpt about the current legal proceedings:

"Take-Two never paid 3DR advances or any signing bonus or any other funds related to DNF, up until July 2008, at which time they paid $2.5m in connection with another agreement for an unannounced game," added the company. "This is the sum total Take-Two has paid 3DR in connection with DNF."

Take-Two filed suit against 3D Realms last week, claiming that it was owed "millions of dollars" after 3D Realms failed to finish DNF. The game had been in development for over 12 years until a "lack of funding" abruptly shut down production.

According to 3D Realms, Take-Two did eventually offer 3D Realms a "last minute" proposal to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise and the 3DR development team. 3DR says that it refused the offer, and claims that the deal included "no upfront money, no guarantee minimum payment, and no guarantee to complete the DNF game."

I, like a little bloody gaming junkie, have been checking daily for news on the 3DRealms thing, and it has been quite interesting to watch it all unfold.

It would seem that with the lawsuit and no team now working on DNF, that it may not see the light of day ever. Which would be very sad as it seemed to be almost done.

It would be great if they can outsource the finishing of the game to a 3rd party and self publish (they can direct sell), just so that all that hard work gets to be seen.

I hope it comes out, not because I think it'll be the second coming of christ or anything, but just it looks like it'd have some fun stuff in it.

WHAT THE FUCK!?

And holy shit, I can't believe those people on ^that website would embarrass themselves as to do their DN impressions. The fat old Asian guy was hilarious.

I tried posting this the other day and failed...

But anyway, I agree with the theory that this is the PR stunt that keeps on giving and they never were working on the game. The Duke theme was just used during their testing of new engines and effects for stuff they were working on. So they got media to release showing duke under development and got to do their testing for real games.

I hope to be proved wrong on this but in any event Duke3d is still fun if you get the 3d updates that mod the whole thing into something approaching modernity.

omg. It's not a PR stunt people. Stop being such conspiracy theorists. 3DR hasn't done anything in years, so them closing would be the same as them remaining open--it makes no difference. I just want to stop hearing about DNF, and anything G.Broussard or S.Miller have to say.

That company is just not relevant anymore, and nobody cares about their once-great hero, Duke Nukem. He's now just as irrelevant as his creators. He has no soul. He has no unique, appealing notability or individuality that make him stand out from every other FPS character. He's just a masculine stereotype that nobody is interested in anymore.

There was a time when his archetype had its place in gaming, but these days, gamers demand more. There's nothing interesting about anything 3DR has shown about DNF to this point. Nothing groundbreaking or innovative at all. It feels like every other soulless FPS with no purpose other than gratuitous violence.

I, for one, am not sad to see it go, and have had no anticipation for its arrival since it was very first announced. I just wish the douchebag talking heads at 3DR would stfu and stay the fuck out of the media.

Let it go already.
