Goodbye Ingmar Bergman
This is still one of my favorite films, directed by the legendary Ingmar Bergman, from Sweden. The protagonist is a war-weary knight (Antonius Block, played by Max von Sydow) who has returned from the Crusades, only to find his homeland gripped by the Plague. He knows in his heart that his faith is gone, but cannot completely let go because his mind refuses to accept a life with no meaning. He meets Death shortly after his arrival, so to stall his demise he challenges him to a game of chess.

In this scene we first see the knight's squire talk to the painter, then after that we see the knight confess to a man he believes is a priest, but it's really Death himself.

A great existential film.
